¡Bienvendios a la clase de AP Lenguaje español!  Welcome to the AP Spanish Language class!

 Summer work 2014

So that you can hit the ground running from the first day of classes, there are some things you must do to review and practice.  You need to practice all four skill areas--reading, writing, listening and speaking.  All of the activities listed below have been designed with that in mind.  

All assignments are due ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.

1.  READING  

Literatura:  You are expected to read a chapter from the novel Cuando era puertorriqueña by Esmeralda Santiago.  Goto the following website to find the text.  If the link does not work, type the title and “Nos va a salir la cosa” in Google.

As you are reading, keep a list of any words you need to look up and write down the definition.  There are some words at the beginning of the document to get you started.  You also need to answer the comprehension questions at the end of the document in Spanish.  Make sure you can identify the who/what/when/where/why for the chapter.  

Write a short summary, no more than 50 words, in Spanish. 

Current events:  You are expected to find 5 newspaper articles in Spanish.  

Choose 5 different articles from various Spanish language newspapers.  

Read each article.

Write a short summary (50+ words) for each article about what you read in Spanish.  

Choose your articles from the following categories:  sports, international, business/technology, culture/arts, health, editorial/opinion and one of your choice.  Each article has to come from a different category--don’t do all 5 from just one.  

Copy/print the article and staple your summary to the article.  Keep a running list of new vocabulary and expressions and look them up in English.  

Also, check out “El Planeta” and “La Semana”--free in newsboxes around the city.  

2. GRAMMAR

As you read “Nos va a salir la cosa”, identify the following verb tenses and create a key to keep track.  You will turn this in when you come back. Find the following in the text

preterit, imperfect, future, conditional, present perfect, pluperfect, subjunctive (present and imperfect), commands (positive and negative), gerund, infinitive, 

Here is the color scheme that your teachers have used—

orange = preterit green = conditional    purple = subjunctive

yellow = imperfect blue = future        pink = commands

infinitive = box around gerund = be creative!

present perfect/plu perfect = circle around, or a diff. shade of a color already used

3.  LISTENING

You are expected to listen to 5 different things in Spanish--they can come from online, radio and tv.  You need to write a short summary of what you heard in Spanish (50 words).  Please include the date and source you used for each of the summaries.  Here are some sources you can use:

Este es el último ensayo de AP!  Es un ensayo persuasivo. 

La fuerza que ejerce la sociedad sobre el individuo puede ser activa (como la policia o una fuerza militar), o pasiva (como la opinión pública).  ¿Cómo funciona la opinión pública para controlar a los ciudadanos?  ¿Tiene efecto?  ¿Es positiva o negativa? 

Responde a las preguntas y utiliza detalles de las películas (2 al menos) que vimos en clase.  Hay información para ayudarte.  Puedes incluir información o ejemplos de otras clases o cosas que leímos en clase también.
Tu ensayo debe ser organizado, en español y debe convencerme de tu opinón.
Tendrás tiempo en clase el día 19 y el día 20 de junio para trabajar.  La fecha de entregada es el viernes, el 20 de junio a la medianoche (entrando al sábado).  Puedes escribirlo a mano o mandármelo por email o google docs.

A.  Charla for “In the Time of the Butterflies” 

Call in to Google Voice, due by Monday, June 2 at midnight

Imagina que eres una mujer viviendo en el pueblo de las hermanas Mirabal.  Ellas tienen una reunion en la casa de un vecino explicando su causa y revelando la verdad del regimen de Trujillo.  ¿Qué harías?  Las conoces bien.  Explica por qué te harías parte del grupo antitrujillista o no--hay que dar razones para apoyar tu decisión.  

B.  El proyecto final--opciones para el proyecto--escoge una opción 

 1.  Carta de recomendación

Tienes que escribir una carta de recomendación a la universidad para una de las hermanas.  La carta debe dar un retrato completo de la persona con ejemplos especificos de su carácter, sus retos, su personalidad, sus mayores fortalezas y una debilidad.  

Tu carta necesita tener--

una introducción explicando como conoces a la hermana y por cuanto tiempo

tres adjetivos que la describen, y un párrafo para cada uno que da ejemplos del adjetivo 

una debilidad que también puedes describir como una fortaleza

un párrafo explicando por qué escribiste esta recomendación con una esperanza para el futuro para la hermana 

La carta debe tener una extensión minima de una página.  

2.   Lista de reproducción (un CD) 

Puedes crear una lista de 10 canciones dedicadas a un personaje de la película.  Las canciones deben ser una representación del personaje o de una situación del personaje.  

Tu lista debe tener:

10 canciones al minimo en inglés y/o español

nombres de los artistas

una explicación por qué escogiste cada canción con letra y ejemplos de la película para apoyar tu explicación

un diseño para la cubierta del CD 

3.  Un homenaje visual

Puedes crear un homenaje visual a las tres hermanas.  Debes incluir imagenes de mariposas, imagenes de cada hermana, una cita de cada hermana, palabras que describen a las hermanas, al regimen de Trujillo, la República Dominicana....

Al reves, debes incluir una explicación de como las palabras y imagenes representan a las hermanas o la situación en la República Dominicana. Todo la superficie debe ser cubierta.  

4.  Una máscara Jano

Jano (en latín, Janus)  es el dios romano que tenía dos caras mirando hacia ambos lados de su perfíl. Como Jano, tenemos dos lados de nuestra personalidad--uno que mostramos al público o al exterior, y uno que nadie ve--la personalidad interior y privada.  

Vas a crear una máscara Jano para un personaje del la película que ilustra los dos lados de su personalidad.  Puedes crear una máscara con ilustraciones en cada lado del papel.  Hay sugerencias que siguen, y puedes escoger una o hacer una combinación.  

También, vas a escribir una descripción explicando por qué diseñaste la máscara así, y qué significa cada lado.  

Motivaciones y valores

Virtudes y vicios--¿cuáles son sus cualidades más admirables?  ¿Peores? 

Colores que representan el personaje

Símbolos (como mariposas) 

Conflictos--con otros personajes, con los tiempos, con la sociedad, con si mismo

Cambios durante la vida del personaje

Momentos cumbres y bajos en la vida del personaje

El proyecto tiene el valor de un examen.  Tu nota se basa en--

50 % Contenido Información y detalles de la película y de las lecturas/

        sitios de web sobre las vidas de las hermanas

40% Gramática Gramática, organización de pensamientos, expresión

        escrita 

10% Expresión artística Creatividad

Poster Contest Guidelines!

Information for poster contest--due to Mrs. Kelley by Thursday, Friday at the latest! 

Follow the guidelines below set by the Massachusetts Foreign Language Teachers' Association.  We may be able to submit it to their contest as well.
How would you illustrate the theme below?

Multilingualism: the Foundation of Global Leadership

RULES:

1. Each entry must be an original work of a current foreign language student (including students enrolled in an ESL class) whose teacher is currently a MaFLA member. No group entries will be accepted.
2. LIMIT:5 (FIVE) entries per school.
3. Teachers must submit the official entry form with their entries.
4. Teachers are required to put the requested information on the back of the poster.
5. All entries become the property of MaFLA.
6. All posters must incorporate the exact wording of the theme.
7. Posters must measure the standard poster size of 22″ x 28″ and have a flat surface with no moving parts. No three-dimensional posters will be accepted.
8. Use lightweight poster material.Posters should be mailed in a 3″ or larger tube.
9. Paints, markers, pencils, crayons, inks, gel pens may be used. Glitter, glue, charcoals, or tape on the front of the poster will not be accepted nor will computer generated posters.
10. Illustrations must be used in addition to words and must be relevant to the theme.
11. There must be a TWO inch margin on all sides free of design and lettering.
12. No copyrighted figures such as Snoopy, Disney characters, Family Guy, Simpsons etc. may be used.
13. Damaged posters will be disqualified.

Please note: Any posters that do not meet all of the criteria will be disqualified.

Here`s what you can do to wrap up los toros--
Watch the videos about Alvaro Munera and Fadjen the bull in France.
Review the other videos and readings about the corridas.
Make you Pinterest board and send me a way to find you so I can follow your board.
Make an autoprueba of words you need to express your opinion about the corridas.

Write me an essay in Spanish to answer this question:  ¿Se debe prohibir las corridas de toros?  Use all of the sources I gave you to back up your answer.  The essay should be 4-5 paragraphs.  You can email it to me by the Monday night after we get back from vacation (Feb. 24).

Other than the toros, please please please use the break to study vocabulary at the back of the Diaz book and try to watch and listen to as much Spanish as you can!
